2010 in Entertainment

Well it’s 2011 now1 and since the #gfax morons aren’t doing a best albums of 2010 poll, I thought I’d write out my own personal choices, and maybe include a few other entertainment mediums in there as well, while I’m at it. So, here’s my top n lists for 20102, and a few miscellaneous awards too.

Best Album that AC/DC released in 1980 that came out in 2010

  1. Airbourne - No Guts. No Glory.

Seriously, why does every rock band coming out of Australia emulate AC/DC?

Best comeback Album after their drummer drunkenly flung himself down an

elevator shaft

  1. Maserati - Pyramid of the Sun

Probably also qualifies for best post-rock album of the year.

Best post-rock album I listened to in 2010

  1. Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

… but only because this album technically comes out in 2011.

“Best” Album I discovered by buying it for my mom

  1. Saving Abel - Miss America

No comment. NEXT.

The Neanderthal award for ‘How the hell can he still sing’

  1. Ozzy Osbourne - Scream

Seriously, what the hell. He can still sing as clearly as he ever can, but the man can’t speak a coherent sentence to save his life.

The Limbo award for ‘How low can he sink’

  1. My Darkest Days - Porn Star Dancing (feat. Zakk Wylde)

Way to go, Zakk. From being Randy Rhoads’ replacement to… collaborating with a band whose sole claim to fame will be this song being played in strip clubs for the next 20 years… and Chad Kroeger.

The ‘He still makes music?’ award

  1. Blaze Bayley - Promise and Terror

Seriously, I thought he quit after his wife died. Dunno how the album is, but it’s probably ok.

The ‘Why do they still make music’ award

  1. Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare

Seriously, how many more of them is God gonna have to strike down before they give up.

Most colourful vinyl

  1. Maserati - Pyramid of the Sun3

Best earworms

  1. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
  2. Lady Gaga - Telephone
  3. Modest Mouse - Float On4
  4. Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4

Well, for some definition of best. Strangely, my top ten tracks from have none of these songs5, but what does it know. These are the songs that worked their way into my head the deepest.

Biggest disappointments of 2010

  1. Gamma Ray - To The Metal
  2. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier

I couldn’t actually listen to To The Metal all the way through. It made me sad, Land of the Free II is one of my favorite albums. The Final Frontier wasn’t horrible, it was just… not good. Mediocre at best. …still better than Virtual XI, but that’s not hard.

And, finally: Top albums that came out in 2010

  1. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
  2. Machinae Supremacy - A View from the End of the World
  3. How to Destroy Angels - How to Destroy Angels
  4. Maserati - Pyramid of the Sun
  5. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
  6. Slash - Slash

I might flesh these out more later, but these are my favorite albums that came out this year. 2010 kinda sucked for music overall, though.

I don’t watch movies much, so this section is pretty small.

Best movie I finally got around to watching in 2010

  1. The Big Lebowski

Best movie of 20106

  1. Toy Story 3

Video games

Most fun I had playing a game

  1. Quake II

Seriously, 12 years old and still immensely fun to play. Especially if you get a source port that lets you use the original CD music.

Best video games that actually came out in 20107

  1. Mass Effect 2
  2. Fallout: New Vegas
  3. Rock Band 3

Those of you that know me may be surprised to see Mass Effect over Fallout, as I may or may not have been addicted to Fallout 3 at one point8. But Mass Effect 2 has a few things that make it stand out over Fallout: New Vegas. Things like, um, story. And good characters9. And it doesn’t crash every hour either. Don’t get me wrong, FONV is fun, but it’s nowhere near the level of ME2.

  1. Or so I’m told. ↩

  2. For 0 < n <- 6 ↩

  3. See, pretty ↩

  4. Blame Steph for this ↩

  5. I certainly did not delete all the Lady Gaga plays or turn off scrobbling that weekend I blasted Telephone on repeat while coding my 312 project. ↩

  6. Astute readers will realize this is the only movie that came out in 2010 that I’ve seen. ↩

  7. … Again, only games that came out this year I actually played. ↩

  8. 200+ hours between PC, PS3, and 360. Yes, I have paid for Fallout 3 three times. Don’t judge me. ↩

  9. Ok, so Veronica and Arcade had good characters. That’s about it. ↩
